Introduction of Work

1. Case analysis
New students are arranged in new student class. This will help them get used to environment while we collect data of students for future disciplinary education.
(1) Direct investigation
Basic data are first established after students arrive. We inspect court ruling and delivery letter. Physical examination is given; finger prints and pictures are taken; household notification is made. We check the family background, interests, specialties, schooling, friend and working experience as well as crime history as reference of case analysis and treatment.
(2) Indirect investigationStudents receive psychometrics (intelligence, aptitude, personality); questionnaire is sent to police station, school, parents and other institutions to find out family background, social background, conducts, and work as reference of case analysis and treatment.
(3) New student training
The purpose is to help students familiar with environment and assistance facilities to stabilize emotions, get used to group regular life and receive education. Courses include :1. daily manners and norms, 2. knowledge on laws and regulations at the school, 3. basic military training, 4 health education, 5. emergency rescue training, 6. individual assistance, 7. group assistance, 8. religious assistance, and 9. physical activities.
New student training lasts one to two months. After students pass tests, they will be arranged into classes. Those in violation rules will be suspended from arrangement into classes.
II. Academic affairs
(1) School education
In response to policy of making reformatory houses like schools, we had Hueiji Elementary School, Wenchang Junior High School and National Tao-yuan Agricultural and Industrial Vocational High School set up branches of supplementary school here. We have one class each in first and second year of electricity in vocational high school and two classes in 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of junior high school and one class each in medium and high classes of elementary school. Except for new student training period, students are arranged into classes by schooling. Courses are given Monday thru Friday. Schools are responsible for all teachers and academic affairs. We are in charge of management and supervision on students and keep close coordination with branches. With qualified teachers, students receive similar courses as outside students and remove marking effect.
This helps a lot when students leave school and continue study.
(2) Assistance in higher study
We have advanced study assistance course to encourage students have advanced study. Wenchang Junior High School appoints teachers to teach; class teachers coordinate in assistance. Each May, we help students take competence examination and apply for examination hall here. We help students that pass the test to leave school for higher education.
(3) Winning opportunity to study at military schools
In the work review on Prevention of Juvenile and Children Crime Project in 1999 by Ministry of Justice, it was suggested Ministry of National Defense loosen standard on taking examination of military schools. Ministry of National Defense responded: “beginning from 2000, those in compliance with Article 83-1 of Juvenile Delinquency Act are allowed to take military school entrance examination. This will be included into enrollment brochure.”
(3) Skill training
To enhance vocational education, we have automobile repair class, motorcycle repair class, baked food class, and interior wire layout class. Outside teachers are invited to teach from Monday to Friday. One session is made each year. Central Region Office, CLA holds skill certificate test after students complete courses. Those pass the tests will be certified of Type C Skill. We also have computer study class and painting mounting in short-term training of three months. Students completing training will have certificate from us.
(4) Talent training and art activities
Xiao 1st class has calligraphy and composition classes; Xiao 2nd class has band; Xiao 3rd class has dance class; Xiao 4th class has guitar class, single wheel bike class; Xiao 5th class has potter class; Xiao 7th class has oil painting class, handmade soap class.
We also have gardening instruction, organic farm instruction and tea zen class to train students' skills.
Classes show study achievements in turn; parents are invited to see and attend seminars to enhance parenting education. We hold competitions on mandarin, composition, knowing plants, Sudoku, calligraphy, wall poster, computer basketball, volleyball, football and softball, etc.
(5) Book management
We have a library; books are bought by us or donated from welfare groups. From June 2004, we had book classification. Borrowing and returning of books are computerized. Students are encouraged to borrow books to enhance knowledge and improve temperament.
(6) Information business
Our website was available from 2005. Concurring information people at Division of Academic Affairs is responsible for maintenance and update to provide the public with rapidest service.
III. Disciplinary education
(1) Moral education
Reformatory education is mainly on morality to help students have accurate ideas of ethics and have sound personality. Other than Chinese, history and geography and citizen courses, group teaching and individual teaching are held each week in each class. We invite Taipei City Juvenile Assistance Association, Prison Fellowship, CYBA, Happy Lotus Line, Catholic Fu-group, Lions Club and Rotary Club to hold care and assistance activities or religious activities on holidays and winter/summer vacations. We also hold winter and summer camps where students build accurate philosophy, attitudes, honor, sense of responsibility, sense of social morality and sympathy.
(2) Life education
Life education is a major mean in morality education. We keep an eye on daily life of students to remove bad habits.
We have school discipline in military management under the unit of classes. Each class has a tutor and 3-4 disciplinary personnel. They live with students and are in charge of management and assessment on daily life. The set an example to students in paying attention to manners, humility, disciplines, cleanness, and getting along well with people. In front of each class, there is a flower nursery run by teachers and students to help students learn to keep a beautiful environment.
(3) Parenting education
Parenting education is a key part in correction. To understand students'family conditions and life before for future reference, we hold activities including:
1. interview with parents at receipt room to understand relation between students and family in order to find and solve problems so students can rest assured here.
2. Talk on the phone and in person to parents: we hold gatherings on Chinese New Year, Mother's Day and Moon Festival where parents are invited to meet their children and improve relation. On the day before gatherings, all students can invite parents to come on the phone, which also improves relation with parents.
(4) Education of rule by law
Education on laws is given since students enter the school. When they are arranged into classes, tutors also instruct knowledge of laws. In weekly Life and Laws course, tutors introduce laws in daily life, including copyright, hindrance of sexual independent, theft, threatening, drug danger and crimes that adolescents might commit in.
